Rabies Vaccine
Who Should Get It:
The rabies vaccine protects against the rabies virus, a deadly disease transmitted through the bite or scratch of infected animals. It’s recommended for:
People exposed to a potentially rabid animal (post-exposure protection)
Travelers to high-risk countries or areas with limited access to medical care
Veterinarians, animal handlers, and wildlife workers
Individuals with frequent exposure to animals (e.g., pet rescuers or zookeepers)
Before the Injection:
Let your provider know if you're pregnant, have a weakened immune system, or had an allergic reaction to a previous dose.
No fasting or special preparation is required.
After the Injection:
Mild side effects may include:
Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
Headache, muscle pain, or fever
These usually resolve in 1–2 days.
Serious side effects are extremely rare.
Protection Timeline:
Pre-exposure: Given as 3 doses over 3–4 weeks
Post-exposure: Requires immediate vaccination (with or without rabies immunoglobulin, depending on prior vaccination status)
Booster doses may be needed for continued risk exposure
